28 day enforcement notices served

Officers from Essex Police accompanied representatives from Basildon Borough Council at the Dale Farm travellers’ site in Crays Hill on Monday, July 4, 2011 while 28 day enforcement notices were served to residents on the illegal part of the site.
Essex Police officers were there to prevent any breach of the peace.
Residents should be advised that the issuing of the notices does not mean any enforcement action is imminent.

Police advised of proposed date for site clearance

Essex Police has been liaising with Basildon Borough Council in respect of planning for the proposed site clearance at Dale Farm in Crays Hill.
We have been advised of the council’s proposed date for the commencement of the site clearance and will be ready to respond as necessary.
Essex Police’s role is to maintain the Queen’s peace and the safety of all people involved.

Police receive special training to deal with unauthorised encampments

Police officers have received special training in respect of the use of powers to deal with unauthorised encampments in the county.
The training has been sought in the wake of enforcement action planned by Basildon Borough Council in respect of travellers at Dale Farm in Crays Hill, Essex, following breaches of planning law.
The force has established a dedicated team of officers to oversee any implementation of section 61 notices under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act which can be used by police to move people on from land if they are there unlawfully.
Decisions in respect of unauthorised encampments will be made on a case by case basis, proportionately, and taking in to account the specific circumstances.

Man pleads guilty to racially aggravated order offence

A man from Newcastle has been sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to committing a racially aggravated order offence at Dale Farm travellers' site.
Anthony Balfour, 68, of Graham Park Road, Newcastle, was arrested on Monday, September 12 after police officers on the site in Crays Hill heard a man use language towards the travellers which amounted to the commission of a racially/religiously aggravated public order offence.
Balfour admitted committing the offence when he appeared before magistrates in Southend on Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
He was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge.
